Interview: Chattanooga FC General Manager Sean McDaniel

Football, or soccer, in the United States continues to grow each year. From the top-flight of Major League Soccer to the regional leagues that dot the country, soccer has found a home in the US after decades under the radar.

Chattanooga FC is one of the top amateur/semi-professional sides in the US. The club’s hard work and popularity has paid off greatly in recent years, and in 2017, the club partnered with Germany’s Wolfsburg.

The club’s general manager, Sean McDaniel, took some time recently to answer some questions about what a soccer club looks for when it is recruiting players, conducting trials and the day-t0-day of the club.

Premier Football UK: In terms of the tryout process, in general terms, what does the club look for in a player?

McDaniel: Although a player’s soccer ability is important, their character is equally as critical. Our players become immersed in the community and there are lots of fans always watching! Finding the right balance between being a great citizen and a quality footballer are significant.

Premier Football UK: Once the season is underway, does the club still try to sign players, or is the squad set when that first match takes place?

McDaniel: We are typically set with our roster by the time the season begins. Although there are occasions where we do need one or two guys to come in mid-season to account for player attrition due to injury.

Premier Football UK: Once the season begins, what is the average week like for the team?

McDaniel: We train two to three hours per day with one to two matches per week. So, each day football is being played. The players also do weight training and aerobic fitness most mornings. Although we play in the lower levels here in the United States, we offer a professional environment for our players.

Premier Football UK: With more outlets for players after they leave CFC, is it now easier than ever to be a
young American an play professional soccer?

McDaniel: In some respects, yes, but becoming a professional athlete is still very difficult. That’s why we focus so much on the total person rather than just their ability to play soccer. Our desire is for these young men to become leaders and pay everything forward. If we can teach these guys how to do this we feel like we succeeded far more than if they make it to MLS or not.
