It’s important to keep things in perspective. This is a players first time soccer trials with a club/squad at this level. It’s understandable that all players need time to adjust. Star players in teams then find themselves playing with and against players who are technically better, fitter, and more experienced than the players you are used to then this can dent your confidence. It may help to look at the career of Jamie Vardy. When he was 16 he was released by Sheffield Wednesday and drifted in to non-league football. It took him four years to break in to the first team of Stocksbridge Park Steels. He was 25 when he left Fleetwood Town of the Conference Premier League to sign for (then) Championship side Leicester City. Four years later, at 29, he’s a Premier League winner and an England international

Becoming a professional footballer is not just about ability. Determination, perseverance and hard work. Working harder for longer than those you’re competing with. It’s about believing in yourself. Watching American Football however I stumbled across a video on Tom Brady (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkXQb1vVqfU&t=1570s) which comes strongly recommended. Like Jamie Vardy, Tom Brady had to do things the hard way. His is a story of determination and perseverance, he wasn’t a gifted athlete but he never lost his self-belief. Ajdin Hrustik, one of our players, had unsuccessful trials at Everton, Stoke City, Derby County, Nottingham Forest and Mansfield Town before he was finally offered a contract at German side Schalke 04

Remember that identifying talent is not an exact science. Different coaches have different opinions, they don’t always value or look for the same things in players. Equally players mature at different ages. It’s also important to remember that football is a global sport. There are opportunities to play professionally the world over. Most (non-UK) Premier League players started their careers at a lower level club in a ‘smaller’ football nation and worked their way up
