Record attendance for women’s football in 2019

Women’s football is at its highest ever peak with teams attracting fans to stadiums and television sets like never before. This weekend, women’s football in England is hoping for a massive day at the turnstiles. Four Women’s Super League matches will be played at traditionally men’s teams’ stadiums.

Liverpool will host Everton for the first-ever Merseyside Derby between the women’s teams to be played at Anfield. Tottenham Hotspur Women will welcome Arsenal Women to the Tottenham Hotspur stadium in another massive derby this weekend between women’s football teams.

Reading Women will host Bristol City Women at the Madejski Stadium while Brighton play Birmingham City Women at the Amex. The WSL is hoping to continue the momentum the women’s game has created thanks to last summer’s Women’s World Cup in France.

Last week, England Women saw over 77,000 fans turn up at Wembley to watch them lose to Germany 2-1. Women’s football is on such a roll that the England ladies’ game against Germany drew nearly 500 more fans than the men’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Montenegro.

The WSL set an all-time record for fan attendance this season when over 31,000 fans attended Manchester City Women and Manchester United Women played at the Etihad in September.

Liverpool’s match against Everton at Anfield is believed to be the first time many fans will be in attendance for a game at the stadium. Tickets for adults cost a mere £5 while kids are free with a paying adult. Both clubs have worked to provide an exciting matchday experience that could see the women’s football game grow and major stadiums host more matches.

The United States, the Nationa Women’s Soccer League saw a massive increase in domestic interest following the country’s World Cup win. The league averaged more than 7,000 per game with attendances seeing growth in August and September after the Women’s World Cup.
