Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos received the 26th red of his career against Manchester City in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie. Ramos is seen as one of football’s dirtiest players due to the red cards, fouls, and other antics he gets up to.
In the Champions League final 2018, Ramos was criticised by many for hurting Mohamed Salah by taking him to the ground and forcing the attacker off the pitch. There are plenty of more times Ramos has made headlines for his antics, but does he top the list of football’s dirtiest players?
5. Sergio Busquets
Barcelona’s Sergio Busquets has surprisingly been sent off just twice in his career. Still, the midfielder has picked up 139 yellow cards. Busquets work as one of football’s dirtiest players often goes unseen and off the ball. His ridiculous rugby tackle on a Liverpool player in the Champions League semifinal first leg in 2019 behind the referee’s back was just more proof of his dirty play.
4. Alexis Ruano Delgado
Alexis Ruano Delgado made his claim to fame as a dirty player while playing for Getafe when he punched Mario Mandzukic in the face in 2004. Delgado now plays for Racing Santander in Spain and has seen red 14 times in his career.
3. Sergio Ramos
There isn’t much to say other than Ramos has 26 career red cards and 219 career yellow cards while playing for Sevilla and Real Madrid.
2. Cyril Rool
Retired French footballer Cyril Rool was a red card machine that makes Ramos blush. Rool picked up 27 career red cards and famously karate kicked an opponent. Rool retired in 2010 after a season with Marseille in which he shockingly received a mere one yellow card.
1. Gerardo Bedoya
Colombian Gerardo Bedoya was sent off a record 46 times during his career. He was even banned in Colombia for 15 matches after a match between Santa Fe (Bedoya’s team) and Bogota was abandoned. Now the coach of Santa Fe, Bedoya was sent to the stands 21 minutes into his coaching debut.
