5 biggest transfers of 2019

The year is nearly over and football fans can look back on some amazing things that took place during 2019. Major events included Liverpool winning the UEFA Champions League, Portugal winning the first-ever UEFA Nations League, and Lionel Messi winning yet another Balon d’Or. The year saw some major money moved between football clubs due to transfers. The two major transfer windows saw millions change hands for top football stars and here we will look at the five biggest transfers of 2019.

Joao Felix – Atletico Madrid; £113.4m

Atletico Madrid paid Benfica £113.4 million last summer for the services of forward Joao Felix. The Portuguese player showed potential at Benfica and was scouted as Antoine Griezmann’s replacement at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

Antoine Griezmann – Barcelona; £108m

Griezmann looked likely to leave Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2018, but he backed out of the transfer at the 11th hour. The summer of 2019 saw Griezmann change his mind and move to the Catalan club.

Eden Hazard – Real Madrid; £90m

Real Madrid couldn’t miss out on spending a big transfer fee in the summer of 2019. They paid £90m to Chelsea making Hazard one of the biggest transfers of 2019. Unfortunately for all parties, Hazard suffered a microfracture to the outside of his ankle following a tackle from PSG full-back Thomas Meunier.

Harry Maguire – Manchester United; £78.3m

In desperate need of a defensive stopper, Manchester United purchased Harry Maguire in the summer of 2019 from Leicester City. The Red Devils have been improved this season but surprisingly, so has Leicester City’s backline. The deal seems to have worked for both parties.

Matthijs de Ligt – Juventus; £76.95m

Matthijs de Ligt starred for Ajax last season in the Champions League becoming one of the most sought-after players in Europe. De Ligt was linked with several clubs before Juve landed his signature. De Ligt started slowly in Serie A but has since improved at the back.
