Jack Harrison: Role model for young football players

Jack Harrison is a name many may not know. The 20-year-old is currently playing for Major League Soccer team New York City FC. But Harrison has roots in England and once dreamed of playing for Manchester United.

Jack Harrison’s road to America

Harrison began his football career as a member of Manchester United’s youth academy. The Englishman dreamed of running onto the pitch at Old Trafford and scoring goals with world-class players. However, at the age of 14, Harrison’s family moved across the Atlantic Ocean to the United States.

Rather than play “American sports”, Harrison focused on his football (soccer) and he excelled. He rose through the ranks of local clubs and earned a scholarship to play at Wake Forest University. He was no longer taking the English route to the professional ranks, but he was doing it the American way.

Jack Harrison to MLS

Harrison was voted the National Player of the Year after his one and only season at Wake Forest. His success led him to the MLS combine, a trial of the best college and university football players that MLS teams fight to sign. His play made him the first player drafted (signed) in 2016, as New York City signed him to bring youth to a squad containing David Villa, Frank Lampard and Andrea Pirlo.

Harrison’s first season saw moderate success as New York City made the MLS Cup Playoffs. However, this season has truly seen the Englishman break out. He has scored 10 goals in 32 games as the team’s second striker to Villa. Harrison’s form has also led him to be called up to the England under-21 squad for their upcoming Euro 2019 qualifiers.

The future looks bright for Harrison, and Manchester City are considering taking Harrison on trial after the MLS season ends in December.

Jack Harrison role model

Harrison is a great role model for young players. He has shown that there are other ways to become a professional football player. As long as you work hard at becoming a better player and play well in trials, anything is possible.
